In der Anleitung steht halt auch dass der Kernel für Raspbian ist, nicht für Xbian oder was auch immer, startx hast du halt auf XBian nicht, also kannst du über raspi-config auch nicht einstellen dass dass automatisch gestartet werden soll - Schritt 8 kannst du also getrost weg lassen/ignorieren.
