Art and creativity play a huge part in the book because the characters are artists (Noah loves to draw; Jude creates sculptures) and also because Noah and Jude are both coming to terms with the fact they dont necessarily fit the mental portrait they painted of themselves as young teenagers. The concept was pretty cool, I liked the twist but the characters really fell flat for me. While children's books have evolved to address myriad experiences and emotions from increasingly diverse perspectives over the last fifty years, Zolotow's work remains relevant, although diversity in the illustrations would be welcome. The sun, stars, ocean, trees, everything, I gave it all up for you.. They dont prevent you from being a badass, or a good person, or brave. Both narrators find their way back to the selves they set aside after their mother's death, and back to their creativity, through a sometimes painful path of human connection that Nelson presents with depth and sensitivity in a way that is very satisfying.
