Stay creative. I mean, the aesthetics alone are reason to consider such an arrangementno hardware visible in the aquarium is always a plus in my book. It's a good idea to always plumb a control valve into your return water line for this very reason, it allows you to fine-tune the return flow rate. Whereas an aquarium sump system is customizable you can build as big as you require. Sure, we see them in some Discus tanks, African Cichlid systems, and occasionally a planted tank, yet they are the exception, rather than the rule. By far, the most important reason for having an aquarium sump filter is that it separates all the equipment from your display aquarium. This is called a manifold and will save you the hassle of using multiple pumps to run additional equipment. If the heater gets exposed to air it can become damaged and may cause a burnout. It makes water quality stable.
Your particular overflow box and drain will operate best within a given range that is appropriate for your tank size, therefore, you want to be able to hit that given flow range with your return pump. A larger sump means more water volume, more water volume equals stability.

The sump system is an open system, so a decrease in water level due to evaporation is common. Or maybe you want to play with live plants and not have botanicals "in situ"- or perhaps you want a "clinical" bare bottom Discus or other "concept" tank, but appreciate the "support" a sump could provide. If not planned correctly, it tends to create a lot of noise and be inefficient for the flow needs through the sump. Hi, just wanted to say thank you for your article. This makes it more stable and less prone to fluctuations of pH level. In my example, the display tank has dual outlets, so the part right after the media reactor manifold splits into two equal lines using a T coupling, the drawing above shows a side view of the display aquariums back wall- a 90 elbow (or two 45 elbows if you have enough space and prefer gentle slopes) connects the T coupling with straight PVC pipe, which in turn connects to the bulkhead using another 90 elbow with adapter. You are welcome to print and use the above drawings for reference, just right-click on the image and click Save Picture As. The return section in this example is equally simple and from the return pumps outlet it consists of: a) a connector fitting from the pumps head to the PVC piping; usually a male or female THREAD x SLIP type; check with your pumps specs, b) a relief manifold with valve- when the pumps gph ratio is higher than your overflows ability to drain water, we need to reduce the flow; there is incorrect advice out there to install a swing valve right after the pumps outlet and partially close it to lessen gph- not only does this shorten the return pumps life by forcing it to operate at higher pressure and therefore radiate more heat into the surrounding water, but its a waste of energy; the use of a relief valve allows us to reduce the flow by directing some of it back to the sump, creating more chaotic flow patterns in the refugium section; in addition to that, we can always modify this branch to accommodate a media reactor fed by the return pump; the relief valve manifold consists of a T SLIP x SLIP fitting, a swing or gate valve ( if swing valve is used, buy THREAD type to easily remove it at a later time, if needed), and a series of PVC pipe pieces and elbows to direct the flow where you want to, c) this section extends from the T manifold to the bottom part of the display tanks bulkhead and incorporates a swing valve; this valve is not used to reduce the flow, but to stop it completely after shutting down the return pump- an overflow section of return line can be removed without draining the overflow. This will increase the oxygen to get dissolved effectively in the tank water. This is where your water level should be. Else the filter will suck air, could get exposed to air and get overheated eventually damaging your filter. Thoughts? A sump can be as complicated or as simple as you want it to be. There are lots of other ideas you could play with Sure, you could adapt a canister to perform some of the functions (like holding "media"), or use a hang-on power filter as a sort of "moss reactor" or what not, but the concept of a sump, with it's spacious capacity and inherit flexibility gives you options and ease of operation that these "band aids" simply can't match.

But I like to divide the second chamber into two halves. It helps in maintaining water quality in a larger tank is easier than in the small one. Read onwe'll get to it. Watch the water level in your sump as it decreases. A protein skimmer works with water surface tension, and freshwater has much lower tension. I use a sump with overflow in my African cichlid tank but debris in a tank with lower flow rates tends to collect on the bottom where a filter intake has a better chance of picking it up. And a reliable submerged or external return pump, sized properly for the system. This gives your aquarium water more contact time with your filtration equipment. , Hornwort, etc.) I have just been given a 300 ltr tank which has a sump with it. However, I think sumps would be a good idea for most freshwaterdisplay aquariums. ), chemical media, such as carbon, or even used as a biological filtration and settling area- You can put in quantities of botanicals, plants, etc. The Freshwater Reservoir simply olds the necessary RO/DI water the ATO pumps into your tank when its sensors are triggered by a low water level. The reality is that, unless you have a huge amount of dissolved organics, a protein skimmer really wont work as effectively as it does in marine applications. Protein skimmers work based on micro bubbles (technically called foam fractionation) by picking up the proteins within the water column. And the other section would house moving bed filter. Test this after plumbing! If you buy a ready-made sump, there will be a marking overflow level. The tank connected to the sump can be stocked above normal limits without overstocking fish. I suggest not using PVC cement where the straight piece of pipe connects to the bulkhead adapter, in case the Durso pipe needs to be cleaned or in situations where you need to flush out a fish who jumped into the overflow section and cannot be removed any other way (just make sure it sits firmly in the connector coupling). Other filters like HOB, power filters, canister filter can handle only a set volume of water. You can use the old formula (LxWxH/231) to determine how many gallons per inch of tank volume there are- so youll know that, if the water drains, say, 3 inches to the bottom of the overflow teeth, that youll need to accommodate x number of additional gallons in the sump over its normal operating range in the event of power failure or whatever.
