BB: Definitely. Taipei, Taiwan-based SAYA (and its parent company Nan Ya Plastics) refers to itself as the worlds largest manufacturer of recycled PET, repurposing over 75 billion bottles every year. Now, under the SAYA brand, the firm says it is engaging in research and development (R&D) efforts to focus on the critical recycling and sustainability issues that face the textile and garment industry and redefine whats possible in renewal.. It became known as Project25, the companys ongoing commitment to sustainability. So thats where this technology and behind-the-scenes control room is really interesting. The company acquired Toter, including its 30-year-old Statesville plant, in 2007. The addition of ConFab to the Wastequip family will help us strengthen our presence in one of the most densely populated markets in the country., Becoming part of the Wastequip family aligns the company weve proudly built over the past four decades with the most respected waste equipment provider in the industry, said Mike Melideo, chief executive officer at ConFab. To lessen these environmental impacts, manufacturers can use recycled resin, which can come from consumers or other industries, to displace the virgin resin they use, she says. We purchased that building two years ago when we first started this project. RT: Do any of the three new MRFs incorporate robotics? It can achieve 66 tons per hour, and one of the things about it is that weve got to make sure its fed on a continuous basis. A recording of the event is available at www.steinert.de. We call it an intelligent sorting facility. Projects in locations ranging from Pennsylvania to Taiwan are targeting landfill diversion options for discarded clothing and fabric.
So, then we said, OK, we have to make a decision: Do you rebuild the south Chicago MRF or do you just say, Lets accelerate this one so it can be a recycling facility that will hit on the volumes? We made that decision in 2019.
RT: What are some unique features of the three new MRFs? Though the newer machine is automated and could run 24/7, a skilled technician oversees the process to ensure it is working properly. Some monitor the molding process; others imprint and assemble finished products. We own that building.
Fox and Tymon drew upon their experience in textile engineering to develop a process that could recycle some of the 25 to 60 percent of the leather that typically is discarded as scrap during clothing and accessory manufacturing. So, Waste Management was on board with doing an investment in an R&D type facility, and we really werent going to make it very publicly known that we had it just because it would just be for testing and internal purposes. According to the company, Wastequip WRX is a turnkey service center offering parts, service and installation for most types of waste-handling equipment. The event attracted several hundred customers, according to the company. It is hoped that G2G will help retailers do well and do good at the same time., Finland-based Infinited Fiber Co., founded in 2016, says it is commercializing what it calls a breakthrough textile recycling technology that offers a solution for the massive piles of used clothes currently being incinerated and piling up at landfills., The patented technology can convert discarded textiles, used cardboard or agricultural waste like straw and regenerate it into high-quality fibers with the look and feel of cotton, says the company. Brent Bell, vice president of recycling at Waste Management and president of Waste Management Recycle America, says the company traditionally retrofits, constructs or upgrades at least two to three of its MRFs every year, he notes that these three facilities were larger in size and processing capacity than some of the companys other MRFs. We do see a lot of growth in the Salt Lake City market. They soon identified their target: leather waste.. The G2G system allows customers to take charge of the reuse of their own wardrobe. This complex recycling process of used post-consumer garments will streamline the garment recycling by offering turnkey retail to fiber solutions to select brand partners.. You can program a robot to prioritize what it picks. So, it is a little bit unusual in terms of opening in a year like this where there are so many restrictions in place on where people can be and what people can do, but we definitely have been fairly successful on the openings of these facilities so far this year. That [mantra] drove our Project25 and CORE initiatives. . In Raleigh, we had an older facility. Wastequip has been owned by private equity companies for many years, including HIG Capital of Miami, which bought the business in 2018. Inside the warehouse is loud and warm, but staffers are hard at work, creating everyday products from small, plastic pellets. Salt Lake City opened up a few months ago. RT: What kind of technology did the company add to these three MRFs? It will be capable of doing 6,000 to 7,000 tons per month once its fully running, and were expecting that to ramp up to those volumes toward the end of the year.
According to Sustainable Composites, that would put a dent in the 1.75 million tons of leather waste sent to landfills or incinerators every year and provide a quality, sustainable alternative for makers of leather goods., The company says it took more than five years and $3 million in R&D, but their result is enspire leather, which Sustainable Composites calls a recycled leather product that not only replicates the look, feel, smell and performance of tanned hide at half the cost, but also dramatically reduces the amount of material that winds up on the cutting room floor, because it is supplied in 54-inch rolls free of holes and other defects.. When I say, new optical sorters, they are a lot better than the older ones were in the past. It was leased, and that landlord wanted to redevelop it into another shopping center. Were investing in [robotic technology] at what I would call our older MRFs just because robots are a good bridge to when you do a full-on investment to the extent we did in Chicago and Salt Lake City. The one thing that we see is if youre investing in a facility that you hope to last the next 10 years plus, we know that 10 years from now the commodity stream will most likely look much different than it does today. Existing Wastequip customers will benefit from access to a suite of products suited to their geographic market, along with additional production facilities to meet demand quickly. Customers can watch the entire end-to-end process in real-time in the store, according to HKRITA. Brent Bell (BB): We normally try to [upgrade] two or three facilities every year.
We had two facilities in the Chicago areaone on the south side and one on the north side. I would also say there is a lot of technology in terms of communications that these systems spit off, whether its a baler, an optical sorter [or] conveyors. Thats what these facilities are seeing. In the Stockholm G2G system, customers can bring their old clothes, which will then be broken down into fibers and yarns to become the raw material for knitted new clothes. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic sending shockwaves across the waste and recycling industries, merger and acquisition (M&A) activity has remained steady throughout 2020. Then in 2020 ramped up to say, This is a facility were going to be dependent on and process tons for our customers in that area. We actually own the land and we're building it brand new on there. We need to invest in new facilities, better technology that can handle more volumes than our existing facilities did. These carts are created using the same patented molding process used for the companys traditional ones. Wastequip introduced its corporate responsibility program, CORE, in 2020. We have about 10 of them today in a handful of different facilities. What were trying to do is create a control room for these facilities where you can tell it, Hey, I want, for example, a temperature bearing measure on a conveyor. If that exceedsIm making a number up here220 F, then I want this light in the control room to turn red so that I am notified as an operator that Ive got an issue. So, theres a lot of technology out there thats been upgraded and refined.
We can monitor 1,000 metrics, but which ones will we actually take action on? Its keeping records of everything passing through. But robots really replace people. HKRITA has for several years worked with and been funded in part by the H&M Foundation, which is affiliated with Sweden-based global clothing retailer H&M (Hennes & Mauritz AB). Its second facility is located in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Wastequip, Charlotte, North Carolina, announced it opened its second Wastequip WRX (pronounced works) facility Oct. 9. In the control room, its essentially some of our best operators and technology experts in the country sitting down and saying, What do we want this control room to operate and how are we going to make action on it? That was a big, one of the big takeaways. Waste Management has opened two new MRFs this year with plans to open one more before the end of the year. There is magic in motion, so to speak, says Nick Daddabbo, director of product management for Wastequip. Wastequip WRX is a turnkey service center offering parts, service and installation for most types of waste-handling equipment. Here [with data] its more on the preventive maintenance side. Its located next to a Waste Management transfer station. For more information, visit www.wastequip.com. The corporate office led by CEO Marty Bryant is in Charlottes SouthPark neighborhood, while its two plants in the state include the Statesville Toter site and Amrep, which makes garbage-truck bodies, in Salisbury. And about probably 2017 or 2018, we pitched the idea that it would be nice for us to have a research and development type facility that we could try new equipment and do things with a essentially try out stuff and see how it works. Live music and sketch artists were part of the show, which also included drone flights across the entire plant and video clips that described the technology that has been installed. It just so happens that these ones are larger [than some of our MRFs], especially the Chicago one. It is recyclable and is made from recycled products., Daddabbo says that leave more behind than you take is a mantra of Wastequip.
