To support our coilovers, Maximum Motorsports sent us a set of their caster camber plates for 2011-2014 Mustangs. The entire system is 100-percent bolt-in and require zero cutting, welding, or modification to the chassis or suspension. You can leave the car loose if its working well. From there, fine tuning for track conditions and the individual car is involved. BMR recommends this type of setting for people who primarily race their Mustang, and have large amounts of power, requiring the maximum amount of traction possible. This site uses cookies to help personalise content, tailor your experience and to keep you logged in if you register. Whats do you guys think will work for me. For accuracy, we recommend measuring and plotting out your suspension system. For this example we used a 10-second street/strip Fox body, that weighs between 2,800-3,200 pounds. Combine this with the absolute juggernaut that is the Coyote engine, and you have a recipe for serious street and track performance. Street oriented cars may not have much they can do in terms of trackside tuning, or moving ballast around. There are some fundamental things that Zimmerman recommends enthusiasts do as their first modifications for better strip performance. BMRs control arm relocation brackets allow you to correct the lower control arm angle, correcting the rear suspension geometry and allowing you to add anti-squat for increased traction. What parts are right, and how do you set them up? BMRs spherical bearing offers tons of articulation for great handling, whiles remaining strong enough to stand up to high loads of any performance environment. He says, (delete ,) the tradeoff for a quieter, and more comfortable ride, is that urethane bushings, while a dramatic improvement over stock, still deflect depending on the load placed on them. For this we recommend measuring the height at the center of the water pump pulley for NA cars. According to Zimmerman, ensuring the rearend is squared and centered, ensures theres no thrust angle, which not only causes the car to move in a direction other than a straight line, but also can cause wear and tear on the drivetrain. BMRs heavy-duty rod ends are designed to solidly link the rearend to the body, eliminate deflection and wasted power.
These are the perfect upgrade for the enthusiast looking for max performance at an affordable price. Instant center location will differ from car to car based on ride height, tire size, air pressure, and suspension-link location. Hey guys im lookin to upgrade my suspension on my car. For this segment, we headed over to GEAR Driven Automotive in Northridge, California, where Saul Gutierrez took the lead and installed the Viking Crusader double-adjustable shocks and struts on our S197 drag car; follow along for the complete details. Installation time is 8-12 hours. BMR Suspensions Xtreme Anti Roll Bar for 2005-2014 Mustang or 2007-2014 Shelby GT500 allows you to launch harder without excessive body roll limiting traction, with little sacrifice to your Mustangs street manners. Losing 70-90 pounds on the front end is going to improve weight transfer to the rear, and switching to coil-overs allows you to tune using adjustable struts and different springs.. In case youre wondering just how fast a street car running these components can go, Team Zs Dave Zimmerman owns a blown, street driven, Fox body coupe, has been as fast as a 1.15 60 foot time using his companys bolt-on, stock style suspension parts. Viking Performance, headquartered in Lakeville, Minnesota, offers a trick set of adjustable shocks and struts for 2005-2014 Mustangs. He also says that Team Z doesnt recommend using the ARB for preload, We dont like to use the ARB for preload, if your car needs 100s of pounds of preload, something else is likely wrong like thrust angle, alignment, or weight distribution.. With this information, you will be able to make an informeddecision about what changes you need to make to improve your launches. This line is measured from the center of the rear tire contact patch to the center of gravity height at the front axle centerline. Adjustable Spherical Upper Control Arm (UTCA020)
Discussion in 'Drag Racing Tech Discussion & Timeslips' started by 09bbbkgt, Jan 27, 2011. When combined with the lower control arm brackets you have 12 possible instant center positions. The actual length of the arms will yield inaccurate information. Urethane bushings are generally what wed recommend for a car that the owner is primarily using a street car or daily driver. Race cars are going to have more tools in their arsenal to fine tune these areas. While the article does feature BMR products, we felt that the value of the information outweighed any negatives from this relationship. A lot of people talk about anti-squat, but once you install your parts, and set your ride height, theres typically nothing you can do to change it. ***
Anti-squat is measured using the instant center location and the neutral line. Inversely, the less percentage of anti-squat, the more the body will squat over the rear tires.
Measuring correctly is critical to achieving accurate results when plotting the rear suspension geometry. BMRs spherical, on-car adjustable tubular control arm for S197 Mustangs (UTCA020) is manufactured from heavy-duty 1 5/8 inch, 0.120-inch wall DOM steel tubing. All rights reserved. In more advanced applications, tuning to control power at launch either via the computer, ignition, or power adder, can be crucial to getting off the starting line as well. Running the upper control arm in the upper position and the lower control arms in the bottom positions will give you a great setup for a street performance application. They also had two upper control arms sharing the load but drag racers were continually ripping the mounts off of the frame when racing. Matching specific components and improving suspension geometry provides you with an incredible blend of performance, aesthetics, and comfort. The Street Beast series is Team Zs ultimate daily driver/occasional drag strip use suspension. BMR Suspension designed the UTCA020 to work well in street performance, drag race, and road race applications. BMR Suspensions Upper Control Arm Mount (PN UCM002) bolts in the stock location and features three mounting positions for the front of the upper control arm. BMR Suspension has taken the guesswork out of making huge launch improvements to the S197 Mustang, and put it all in one convenient package. I do alot of drag racing and need a good setup. There are a few different ways to measure center of gravitybut for naturally aspirated carswe normally go by the center of the water pump pulley on Mod-motor and Coyote cars. Just reach under the car and turn the knobs! Wed start with a recommendation of -2 or -3 degrees on pinion angle, more if theres urethane bushings being used. They do this for tire clearance and simplicity. Additionally it has dual control arm mounting points for changing instant center. Second, it increases the anti-squat percentage. Our rod ends will stand up to high loads of any performance environment, offering all of the bind-free suspension articulation needed for great handling. Control Arm Relocation Brackets (CAB005)
BMRs rod end, double-adjustable tubular control arms for S197 Mustangs (TCA020) are TIG-welded using heavy-duty DOM steel tubing. A 5/8 centerless ground, hard chrome piston rod provides increased durability and eliminates piston rod flex. The front suspension is another area that needs to be addressed as performance increases. They're designed to support the additional forces coilovers feed into the shock towers. Weld sent us a set of 15x10 with a 5-inch backspace and a single bead lock. So whether its a 2,000-plus hp drag car, or a 450 hp street car, these arms can handle whatever the car owner throws at them. Team Z designs and builds every component in house. In the shock department, Zimmerman says Team Z always recommends adjustable shocks. ***NOTE: requires use of existing bushing shell. Center Of Gravity: 21.5 inches (Center Of Water Pump Pulley), Rear Mount Heights: 4 inches, 5 inches, 6 inches, 8 inches, Front Mount Heights: 18.5 inches, 19.25 inches, 20.0 inches. The steel is a proprietary blend, in fact its the same as whats used for many racing engine valve springs. Once you have this line plotted out, it is easy to figure out the anti-squat percentage based on the instant center location. Differential Housing Bushing (EN001)
Whether your Mustang is a street going car, or you have big aspirations of knocking down low ETs at the drag strip, understanding the rear suspension and what goes into it will get you down the track faster. Thats where Zimmerman stresses to keep things simple, whether youre a beginner, or a pro.
That 60 foot time is good for 7-second quarter-mile ETs. The bushing material is exclusive to Viking shocks and all mounting hardware is either zinc or chrome plated for durability and professional appearance. Whether your S197 is primarily a racer or simply a fun daily driver, understanding the rear suspension geometry can be extremely beneficial. Most of us are familiar with the term instant center, but for those who arent, the instant center is the intersection point of the upper and lower control arms if both links were extended until they intersected. The company builds performance suspension components that are designed to give customers the strength and adjustability to achieve nearly any level of performance without having to use full race-style parts that arent designed for street use. By running the instant center in the shortest possible position with a large amount of anti-squat, the rear tires will be driven into the ground aggressively as power is applied. That doesnt mean that most still wont benefit from tying the front and rear subframes together. Constructed from 4130 chrome-molly steel, these parts are incredibly strong to prevent deflection and withstand the tremendous loads placed on them at the track. Control arms are made from 4130 chrome-moly, and can be ordered with urethane bushings, or heim joints. This setup isgreat for people with moderate amounts of horsepower who primarily use their Mustang on the street. These are the perfect upgrade for the enthusiast looking to greatly improve performance without NVH levels being a concern. Spring and shock selection play a crucial enough role that Zimmerman has worked with Strange as well as a spring manufacturer to develop custom valved shocks and specialized springs. BMR Suspension designed the CAB005 to work well in street performance, drag race, and road race applications. These illustrations are designed to give you an approximate idea of where the instant center and anti-squat percentages would be in other S197s with similar configurations. We talked with Zimmerman, to find out some of the basics every Mustang owner should keep in mind when planning suspension upgrades, and setting the car up for the track. Three link suspensions place excessive loads on the upper link bushings. We promise not to use your email address for anything but exclusive updates from the Power Automedia Network. The stock control arm flexes under even light cornering loads giving you inconsistent handling characteristics. The center adjuster is CNC-machined from chrome-moly steel with rolled threads for the ultimate in strength and durability. The design gets the car within a window for anti-squat, etc, and weve found if we can get you in that window, the rest can be tuned with spring and shock adjustments.. 2005 -
Thus, it is universally applicable, no matter what suspension you choose.]. To begin setting up any car for the track, you must first have a solid foundation to build upon. From there, its a matter of testing the car to see how it does. When you plot out the 12 possible instant center locations, its easy to see that you have a few clustered together, a few further out, and few so far out, they arent even in the illustration. Zimmermans personal car has run a 1.15 60-foot time. In the 2005-2014 Mustangs, two bushings are responsible for handling the same torque load that four bushings had done before. Normally, center of gravity height is measured based on the camshaft location, but this is not applicable with overhead cam engines. It is engineering to bolt on and stand up to extremely high horsepower and torque levels, as well as the hardest drag strip launches without moving on the rearend housing. The result is less deflection than what is typically associated with urethane bushings in aftermarket control arms. The effective length of the upper and lower control arms must be used. The combination of parts is designed to truly transform the car into a track monster. The stock control arm with soft rubber bushings deflects under load and absorbs power instead of transferring it to the tires. This does a few things. All rights reserved. Up front, we chose Weld's 17-inch V-Series 1-piece Frontrunner wheel with a matching 27.5 x 4.0-17 tire. Experienced tech writer, and all around car aficionado, Don's love for both cars and writing makes him the perfect addition to the Power Automedia team of experts. BMRs bolt-on relocation brackets for S197 Mustangs are the ultimate in strength and adjustability. For the average enthusiast, this gives you the ability to correct the rear suspension geometry at almost any level of drop. For our build, we went with the Crusader series. Team Z also has a talented staff on hand to answer technical questions over the phone. The machined, forged aluminum body is lightweight and stronger than billet. They fit our 26.0 x 8.5-15 M/T drag radials perfectly. It is also important to correctly measure the center of gravity height for accurate anti-squat percentages. Combine this with soft bushings that have massive amounts of deflection and youre left with poor performance. Zimmerman prefers this simple approach to altering the pickup points in extreme fashion on the vehicle. Zimmerman spent a decade working on this spring design. The calculator will give you the instant-center length and height, as well as the anti-squat percentage. Adjustable Lower Control Arms (TCA020)
BMRs upper control arm mount is a direct replacement for the OE mount and requires no drilling or welding to install. this means the body will not squat much and the axle will not drop away from the body much. While its not overly surprising, this surge is largely due to the market being fairly saturatedwith these affordable Mustangs. Zimmerman says that Team Z has also worked for years designing suspension components that work within the restrictions of the Mustangs stock pickup points. It will also make a huge difference in the performance of the car. For the sake of this example, we plotted all of the possible IC locations on BMRs 2011 Mustang GT with stock-style wheels and tires. The effective control arms lengths are measured at 18.25 inches for the lowers and 9.4 inches for the upper. Having the correct neutral line is critical for accurate anti-squat percentages. Over the past few years, the S197 Mustang made a significant jump in popularity at the drag strip. Firstly, it changes the instant center location. If your street car is going to make regular trips to the track, investing in some stick rear rubber is a key part of getting your 60-foot times to improve. The XSB005 gives you as much as 4,090% increase (2,430%, 3,080%, and 4,090%) in rate over the stock bar (depending on year and model). These rate increases and adjustability allow you to almost eliminate body roll so you can leave the starting line harder with maximum traction. Team Z offers several different options for Mustang owners with stock style rear suspension. For most power-adder applications, we normally recommend measuring from the top edge of the water pump pulley. Whether you simply want more traction for your daily driver, or the ultimate drag strip car, rely on BMR Suspension! Theres the Street Beast series of parts, which are adjustable, but also feature urethane bushings for lower NVH levels. As you might expect, control arm relocation brackets allow you to change the rear lower control arm mounting location. We asked Zimmerman where hed start baselining this car. NHRA Reveals A/FX Exhibition Class. Mario Johnson Reveals Spectacular New 67 Camaro For 4.84 Shootouts! From there its a matter for fine tuning. Zimmerman used a 10-way adjustable Strange front strut as his example. Team Z also prides themselves on its K-members being a no-pry design, meaning they bolt directly in with no fuss, and with old components out of the way can be in position in a matter of minutes. Team Z has worked for over a decade at designing and perfecting its rear suspension components. BMRs DRP002 Level 2 Drag Race Package (DRP002) addresses all the major points of the rear suspension, improving the system and not just a few components. This decreases the anti-squat percentage, which will allow the body to squat over the rear tires. Running the upper control arm in the upper position and the lower control arms in the middle positions, you extend the instant center well beyond the nose of the car, while keeping the position relatively low in relation to the neutral line. You can often find him at the track working with those racers running his parts at major events. Similar to BMRs lower control arm relocation brackets, its adjustable upper control arm mount features three positions to further increase the level of adjustability in the rear suspension. The design gets the car within a window for anti-squat, etc, and weve found if we can get you in that window, the rest can be tuned with spring and shock adjustments. For the race enthusiast, you have the ability to move the instant center location and run the amount of anti-squat of your choosing to help tune the chassis for hard launches. Power will be applied to driving the car forward. Whether you run a factory upper control arm or a beefy arm like either of these from BMR, the position of the front mount has a big impact on power application. The TCA020s heavy-duty construction eliminates control arm flex, giving you much improved repeatability on the street, starting line, or in the corners. Tires are an important area as well. Additionally, these bushings are subjected to more "twist" than before since the rearend can better articulate in a three link design. We talked to Zimmerman about some basic tuning strategies once everything is in place. The instant center is in a position that isnt overly aggressive, and the anti-squat percentage is just under 100 percent. When the highest levels of performance are required, BMR uses heavy-duty Teflon-lines Viking Performance spherical bearings. When it comes to setting up the rear suspension of your S197, you can set it up to give you options. Grip and Strip series control arms feature spherical bearings. Tire pressure, along with adjustable shocks, will also need to be changed to optimize any setup. The benefit to anti-squat with big power Mustangs is that the tires are driven into the ground hard, which can help with traction. While slower cars can also benefit from an anti-roll bar, Zimmerman usually starts recommending these once a customer has eclipsed the 10.99 barrier. This configuration will not be very aggressive and is great for a basic daily driver. 10-second street cars arent uncommon these days. If the instant center is above the line you have more than 100 percent, less than 100 percent if it falls below the line.
Our upper mount is made from heavy-duty 1/4" plate and can be either bolted or welded into place. The higher the point is, the more aggressive power will be applied. The lower control arms are built from the same diameter 4130 chrome-moly as the companys four-link suspension systems. Plotting your instant center can be a lengthy and tedious process. Typically for customers using all Team Z parts, Zimmerman can offer a set of adjustments to baseline a car, based on its power output, weight, and the components installed. -Dave Zimmerman, Team Z Motorsports. The neutral line is a line from the center of the rear tire contact patch to the center of gravity at the front axle centerline. The Crusader series is designed for use-specific competition vehicles. This means when power is applied to the rear suspension, the force of the engine is being applied to the links instead of the body of the car. There are plenty of instant-center calculators on the Internet, and we used Baseline Suspensions General IC Calculator. Customers can be certain that the person providing their tech support is skilled and will be providing answers based on what theyve learned in their years of working with Team Z and its customers. http://www.s197forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=32593, (You must log in or sign up to reply here. The negative side of more anti-squat is that the car will need rear shocks with the ability to control the aggressive axle movement. The Viking double adjustable shocks (Warrior Series) feature easy bolt-in installation in the stock mounting locations. Also keep the pickup points simple.. These bushings are molded from 95-durometer, low-deflection, polyurethane, and are internally fluted to keep grease in the bushing under high compression loads. From there its a matter of controlling power and weight.. This flex is great for handling, but under straight line acceleration, it contributes to wheelhop and inconsistent launch characteristics. The Alpha-1 rear wheels feature WELD's cut-weight-at-all-costs hubless design as seen on their NHRA Pro Stock, Funny Car, and Top Fuel racing wheels. BMR Suspension designed the XSB005 sway bar for street performance and drag race applications. Running the control arms in the bottom position of both the upper control arm mount and relocation brackets will give you the most aggressive setup available. This point can be changed by raising or lowering the mounting points of the upper or lower control arms. You will also need to measure the center of gravity. The stock control arms flex under cornering loads giving you inconsistent handling characteristics. Once you have all of your measurements, youll need to plot the suspension. Dont overthink things, keep things simple, start with a good set of upper and lower control arms, springs, shocks, and struts.
This special recipe, gives the bushings in the rear control arms a higher durometer rating (stiffness). It is important to know that not all instant-center and anti-squat settings will work for every setup. Mustang. Every car is different, and the instant center and anti-squat numbers are going to vary per application. Even if you choose to use the Street Beast for your street car, Team Z has worked to design a proprietary urethane blend for the bushings. This new Mustang platform only has one upper control arm and the mount is only bolted into place. Team Z offers upper control arm systems with relocated pickups, but they dont typically alter the torque boxes where the control arms mount. Not only does it take critical weight off the front of our car, but it looks fantastic. Rear-wheel drive drag cars rely on weight transfer when the car launches to provide additional traction to keep the rear tires from spinning. 2022 Power Automedia. Zimmerman gave us an example scenario to use in our discussion of setting up a Mustangs suspension. If you can swing having a dedicated set of wheels just for the track, even if its for the rear only, thats even better. Xtreme Antiroll Bar (XSB005)
More force on the rear tires means more traction. If the instant center falls on this line, you will have 100-percent anti squat (this is considered neutral). Support Us - Become A Supporting Member Today! This is effective for correcting rear suspension geometry on lowered cars when the LCA mount of the body becomes lower than the rearend side. Several factors affect weight transfer, including center of gravity, suspension geometry, and suspension damping. Many first timers, and even some pros, may not realize if the rear end was installed not centered and squared.
By designing the bushing as a multi-piece unit, it allowed them to keep the inside portion stiff for great straight-line acceleration and the outside portions soft for bind-free articulation. Adjustable dampers (struts and shocks on a Mustang) allow drag racers to tailor the weight transfer rate to the needs of their car and track conditions. Our Alpha-1 wheels are aimed squarely at customers like us: sportsman racers competing in the radial and small tires classes. This is especially true for 79-04 cars. This allows for further tuning of the rear suspension geometry. The same principals that make single-digit race cars work also apply to the guy with nothing more than lowering springs whohas never been to the track. It is important to know that if you have the correct parts, you have the ability to tune the chassis launch characteristicsso it performs the way you want it to. Their struts and shocks are "double adjustable," which means the damping force in compression and rebound (extension) can be tuned independently via knobs on the bottom of the shock and strut bodies. For most power adder cars we recommend measuring to the top of the water pump pulley. Launch RPM, is something that most can control to a certain extent. The CAB005s allow you lower the lower control arms rear mounting position by as much as 3 inches, correcting the control arm angles. Brad Edwards 3-second radial tire Mustang relies on Team Z on race day. What about those who are new to drag racing, who have never delved deeper than the occasional test n tune night and want more out of their cars? Total: 180 (members: 4, guests: 158, robots: 18). Experienced drag racers understand that many duels on the strip are won or lost in the first 60 feet. Weld's Alpha-1 and V-Series wheels fit that bill perfectly. Of course the rear end needs to be squared and centered first. Many factors are at play when power is applied to the chassis, but for the sake of this discussion, we are going to focus on rear suspension geometry. 9 Forms of Friction: Raybestos Clutch Plates, Ford Wants Police Departments Investigating The F-150 Lightning, Watch A Twin Turbo GT350 Make 1,001 Horsepower On The, Push To Start Your Classic With IDIDITs New, QA1 Handles First Generation Mustang With Bolt-On Front, Big Oly returns to Baja at the NORRA Mexican, Carlisle Ford Nationals Poised To Break Attendance, Texas Cobra Club Strikes San Marcos For Annual Spring, This Street/Strip 56 Custom Has A Very Unique Ford, SEMA 2021: Optimas New Line Of Modern Yellow Top, SEMA 2021: Isky Racing Cams Drops New Solid Roller Bushing, SEMA 2021: Edelbrocks New Carb Is The Most High-Tech 4150, PRI 2021: The Driveshaft Shop Introduces Pro-Level, PRI 2021: WELD Racing Rounds Off 2021 With New RT-S, PRI 2021: Ultimate Headers For Fords 7.3-Liter Godzilla, Five Questions With Ford Performance Marketing Manager Rob, We Join Ford v Ferrari Movie Crew, Stunt Drivers At Daytona Rolex, Five Questions With Ford Performance Marketing Manager Jim, High-Performance Racing Fasteners: How ARP Fasteners Are, Brenspeed Shows Off Five GT350 Builds in the Works, Shop Tour: Shifting Into Overdrive With Performance, Video: Take A Tour Of How Ford 3-D Prints Shelby GT500, Power At Your Fingertips With The SCT GTX Tuner for S550, Taming The Dragon In A Bolt-On 2015 Mustang, Ford Muscle Digs Through Archives For Mustang, ICYMI: Ford Muscles Top Stories from March, ICYMI: Ford Muscles Top Stories from February, 9 Forms of Friction: Raybestos Clutch Plates Explained, Ford Wants Police Departments Investigating The F-150 Lightning SSV, Watch A Twin Turbo GT350 Make 1,001 Horsepower On The Dyno, Ford Releases Debut Date For Next-Generation 2024 S650 Mustang, SEMA 2021: Turbosmarts Straight-Gate50 Is Redefining Wastegates, SEMA 2021: Maradyne Blows Us Away With New Jetstreme I and II Fans, SEMA 2021: Flaming River Microsteer Steers Us In the Right Direction.
