In order to increase the quality and quantity of space in the rental unit, we reimagined it as a two-floor, 1 or 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment with a modern aesthetic, increased ceiling height on the lowest level and provided an in-unit washer/dryer. This custom Corian Shower was Fabricated and Installed by Signature Surfaces, Sacramento CA. The second floor serves as master suite for the couple - a bedroom with a walk-in-closet and ensuite bathroom, and an adjacent study, with refinished original pumpkin pine floors. This enabled the wall hung toilet to be mounted in this 'double' exterior wall without protruding into the space. A ribbon of shimmery blue terrazzo tiles flows from the back wall of the tub, across the floor, and up the back of the wall hung toilet on the opposite side of the room. The historic front facade is insulated from the interior, while the rear facade is insulated on the exterior. With the existing vanity cabinet and counter tops staying I wanted to coordinate the dark counter with adding some dark elements elsewhere to tie they in together.
While the exterior materials contrast a calm, minimal palette with the sleek lines of the gabled silhouette, the interior spaces embody a playful, artistic spirit. Rather than starting with an outcome in mind, this 1,400 square foot residence began from a polemic place - exploring shared conviction regarding the concentrated power of living with a smaller footprint.
